GST Registration — Document Checklist by Business Type
GST registration is applied for in Form REG-01 on the GST portal. Since April 2025, CBIC has told officers exactly which documents they may ask for — and not to ask for more. This list follows that instruction.
Every applicant
PAN of the business (for a proprietor, their own PAN)
Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors and the authorised signatory — authenticated by OTP, or, if the application is flagged, by a visit to a GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric verification
Photographs of the proprietor, partners or directors and the authorised signatory
Bank account proof — cancelled cheque, passbook first page or statement
Mobile number and email of the authorised signatory
By type of business
Proprietor: PAN, photograph and Aadhaar of the proprietor
Partnership firm: the partnership deed — officers are told not to demand Udyam, shop or trade licences on top of it
Company or LLP: certificate of incorporation, and a board resolution or letter authorising the signatory
Company or LLP: Digital Signature Certificate of the authorised signatory
Proof of the place of business — any one route
Your own premises: one of the latest property tax receipt, municipal khata, electricity bill or water bill
Rented premises: the rent or lease agreement, plus one ownership document of the owner; if the agreement is not registered, add the owner's identity proof
A spouse's or relative's premises: their consent letter, their identity proof and one ownership document
No agreement at all: an affidavit on stamp paper, plus an electricity bill in your name
What most often goes wrong
An address in the application that does not match the proof — a missing floor or door number is enough.
Blurred, cropped or incomplete uploads.
Not replying to a query (REG-03) within 7 working days. The application can then be rejected and you start again.
